Food Lion FEEDS Foundation supports Meals on Wheels
March 16, 2018
Senior Resources received a $1,500 grant from the Food Lion FEEDS Charitable Foundation to support the Meals on Wheels program. The funds will provide approximately 200 meals to hungry seniors and disabled adults.
Food Lion was also an event sponsor for the March for Meals 5K on March 10, 2018. This annual fundraiser seeks to raise funds for Meals on Wheels and other agency programs, and to raise awareness of the issue of senior hunger in our community.
According to the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger (NFESH), South Carolina ranks fourth-worst in the nation for food instability among senior citizens. Nearly 20 percent of South Carolina’s senior citizens are threatened with hunger, according to a 2017 report from NFESH.
“The support from Food Lion will help us meet the basic human needs of seniors who aren’t able to maintain an adequate diet due to financial and transportation constraints,” said Pam Dukes, Executive Director of Senior Resources. “In most cases, the meal our volunteers deliver is the only meal of the day for the clients we serve. Without meal delivery, many of our clients would be forced to choose between paying for food, or for medication and household expenses.”
With a corps of more than 300 volunteers, the Meals on Wheels program delivers a hot, nutritious meal each day to clients’ homes. The nutritionally balanced meals provide one-third of the daily nutritional requirements for the homebound clients. Senior Resources is the only provider of Meals on Wheels in Richland County.
Established in 2001, the Food Lion Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $9 million in grants.Back to All News & Blog
