Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
April 9, 2018
Most of us know this as the first line and name of the poem by Welsh poet and writer Dylan Thomas. The poem is about death (the night) and how we should rage against the dying of the light (death). But it makes me think of our clients.
Most of our clients are fiercely independent, as I’m sure I will be when I am their age. Independence is understandably difficult to give up, as many people see it as a first step toward the dying of the light. What Senior Resources does helps seniors maintain independence as long as possible, and prevents or delays the need for institutionalized care.
Sometimes our clients just need help with food, and Meals on Wheels helps if they are unable to access food or unable to prepare meals. As important as the food that Meals on Wheels serves is the wellness check and friendly socialization provided by the volunteer who delivers to the senior’s home.
Our home care program is another important service in helping seniors maintain independence. Far beyond just needing a meal, our home care clients need assistance with housekeeping, laundry, and sometimes even dressing and bathing. These seniors are our most frail clients, and just one step away from relocating into a facility.
It is an unfortunate fact that sometimes our clients die. They are elderly, and some are struggling with health concerns. As sad as it is to hear that a client passed away at night in their sleep, we consider that a success, because we helped them stay at home where they wanted to be. So, as we mourn their passing, we also celebrate a life lived independently, raging against the dying of the light.Back to All News & Blog
