Every Senior Counts 2016
"Strike out senior hunger"Read This Story
Each month, volunteers pack about 350 bags of nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables at two locations -- 100 bags at Greenview Park and 250 bags at Park Street Baptist Church. The Park Street co-op has been operating for more than 40 years. Due to an increased demand in the area, the Greenview Park location was opened in August 2010.
Our volunteers first make an early-morning trip to the S.C. State Farmers Market to pick up crates of fresh produce. The crates are unloaded at the co-op sites, and our crew of volunteers pack 2-3 fruits and 4-5 vegetables in each co-op bag. Recipes and nutritional information are also included in each bag.
Local churches and other groups pick up bags to deliver to their senior shut-ins. Our volunteers also deliver the bags to residents of low-income senior housing developments. Other bags are purchased by seniors for a nominal cost.
Last year, with the help of our volunteers, we packed more than 3,000 bags of fresh fruits and vegetables for our local seniors!
