WoodmenLife Donation Helps Feed Hungry Seniors

News

September 5, 2018

The Columbia chapter of WoodmenLife® donated $500 to Senior Resources to support the Meals on Wheels program. The funds will provide 65 meals delivered to the homes of elderly or disabled residents of Richland County.
“This support will help us meet the basic human needs of seniors who aren’t able to maintain an adequate diet due to financial and transportation constraints,” said Pam Dukes, Executive Director of Senior Resources. “In most cases, the meal our volunteers deliver is the only meal of the day for the clients we serve. Without meal delivery, many of our clients would be forced to choose between paying for food, or for medication and household expenses.”
With a corps of more than 300 volunteers, the Meals on Wheels program delivers a hot, nutritious meal each day to clients’ homes. The nutritionally balanced meals provide one-third of the daily nutritional requirements for the homebound clients. Senior Resources is the only provider of Meals on Wheels in Richland County.
According to the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger (NFESH), South Carolina ranks eighth-worst in the nation for senior citizens who are threatened with food instability. Nearly 17 percent of South Carolina’s senior citizens are threatened with hunger, according to a 2018 report from NFESH.
WoodmenLife was founded in 1890 as a nonprofit. Its 900 chapters across the country share a national focus to fight hunger in their communities. The agency gives back to more than 700,000 member customers, who share a commitment to family, community and country, and the communities in which they live.
