Okay, maybe the Pope wasn’t talking specifically about Senior Resources, but in his address to Congress last week, he spoke of the value of seniors as volunteers. He said “…elderly persons…are a storehouse of wisdom forged by experience, and who seek in many ways, especially through volunteer work, to share their stories and their insights.”
Of course, we at Senior Resources already knew this.
Our Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent programs provide opportunities for low-income seniors to volunteer their abilities to children or other seniors while also benefitting from community service. Our Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) matches the talents and interests of seniors to community needs. The services these seniors provide range from tutoring, to hospital service, to library service. Senior volunteers in these three programs served more than 158,000 hours of community service last year! That’s a lot of sharing of wisdom and experience!
Our experience has been that seniors want to give back to their communities, and are generous with their time and their talents. Senior Resources’ volunteer programs enhance seniors’ quality of life by keeping them active and engaged in their community, and prevent loneliness and isolation. We are thankful for our volunteer seniors and the support they both give and receive in the community.
