Senior Resources received a $1,000 grant from the Rotary Club of Forest Acres to support the Meals on Wheels program.
The funding will be used to provide approximately 135 hot, nutritionally balanced meals to homebound seniors and disabled adults. The meals are delivered to clients’ homes each day by Meals on Wheels volunteers, and they provide one-third of the daily nutritional requirements for these homebound clients.
“Without meal delivery, many of our clients would be forced to choose between paying for food, or for medication and household expenses,” said Pam Dukes, Executive Director of Senior Resources. “This gift from the Rotary Club of Forest Acres means that we can eliminate that worry for our hungry neighbors.”
According to the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger (NFESH), South Carolina ranks fourth-worst in the nation for food instability among senior citizens. More than 18 percent of South Carolina’s senior citizens are threatened with hunger, according to a 2017 report from NFESH. Senior Resources is the only provider of Meals on Wheels services in Richland County.
“The members of the Forest Acres Rotary Club are happy to be able to raise money to donate to organizations such as Senior Resources to help fund programs like Meals on Wheels,” said club President Sandy Olson. “We’re proud to partner with Senior Resources to provide support to our seniors and disabled adults in need.”
