Meals on Wheels is the only federally supported program designed specifically to meet the nutritional and social needs of seniors. Our Meals on Wheels program delivers to the homes of our community’s most at-risk individuals.
DID YOU KNOW…. | |
51% of our Meals on Wheels recipients are age 75 or older | |
63% are women | 11% are veterans |
35% live at the federal poverty level | 55% are a racial or ethnic minority |
60% live alone | 68% take 6+ medications each day |
Hundreds of volunteers enable over 160,000 meals to be delivered to more than 1,100 seniors in our community each year. These in-home visits provide unique opportunities to meet nutritional needs, reduce social isolation, address safety hazards and provide holistic care.
For the 60% of recipients who live alone, the person delivering the meal is often the only person they will see that day. The socialization aspects of the meal delivery are as important, if not more so, than the nutrition it provides. Research by the Meals on Wheels America organization indicates that one in five seniors feel lonely and that the negative effects of loneliness on health are similar to smoking up to 15 cigarettes in a day! This is a staggering statistic and shows why what we do is so important to the health of the elderly in our community.
