Senior Resources, Inc., has received a $13,000 grant from the DAV Charitable Service Trust to provide Meals on Wheels service to veterans in Richland County. The $13,000 grant will provide delivery of a hot, daily meal to seven homebound veterans for one year.

Senior Resources currently delivers hot and frozen meals to the homes of 600 elderly and disabled residents of Richland County, including 71 veterans. But the agency also has a waiting list of about 100 people, including 24 veterans, who are waiting for Meals on Wheels service.

“We feel strongly that we can honor our veterans by serving them in their time of need,” said Senior Resources’ Executive Director Pam Dukes. “We appreciate the support from the DAV Charitable Service Trust as we work to eliminate our waiting list and make sure none of our veterans go hungry.”

South Carolina currently ranks 4th-worst in the nation for food instability and hunger among the elderly, according to the National foundation to End Senior Hunger. Nearly 20% of South Carolina’s seniors struggle to maintain an adequate diet. Senior Resources is the only provider of Meals on Wheels in Richland County.

“DAV has remained dedicated to fulfilling the needs of our nation’s veterans for nearly 100 years, and our Trust exists to assist other charitable organizations in their efforts to improve the lives of the men and women who served,” said Richard E. Marbes, President of DAV’s Charitable Service Trust.  “It is our hope that by providing these funds, Senior Resources will accomplish that very goal.”
