Bank of America, a longtime community partner with Senior Resources, has continued its generous support of the Meals on Wheels program with a $10,000 donation. The funds will be used to provide 1,317 meals to homebound seniors. That is the equivalent of serving more than five clients for a full year.
“For many of our seniors, Meals on Wheels service allows them to eat a nutritious meal each day without having to forego their medication or other necessities,” said Senior Resources Executive Director Pam Dukes. “We appreciate the partnership with Bank of America as we shine a light on the basic needs of our senior citizens and make sure this population is not forgotten in the public eye.”
Bank of America’s grant program strives to build thriving communities by addressing issues related to economic health and stability, workforce development and education, community development, and basic needs.
In addition to the ongoing financial support, Bank of America also provides volunteer support to Senior Resources. Mark Hocutt, Vice President and Senior Relationship Manager for Bank of America, serves on the Senior Resources Board of Directors. And the bank organizes an annual volunteer blitz, where their Columbia-area employees spend a day packing and delivering Meals on Wheels. This year, the Bank of America employee blitz was held in February 2018.
With a corps of more than 400 volunteers, the Meals on Wheels program delivers a hot, nutritious meal each day to clients’ homes. The nutritionally balanced meals provide one-third of the daily nutritional requirements for the homebound seniors.
According to the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger (NFESH), South Carolina ranks eighth-worst in the nation for seniors who face food insecurity. Nearly 17 percent of South Carolina’s senior citizens are threatened with hunger, according to a 2018 report from NFESH. Senior Resources is the only provider of Meals on Wheels services in Richland County.
