Baby, it’s cold outside

Blog

November 30, 2016

It’s December.  It’s supposed to be cold outside, but as I write this, it’s really not.  I’m sitting at my desk with my window open, enjoying 75° breezes coming in through the window.  By the time you read this, I’m just as likely to be sitting at my desk with a scarf and boots on because the weather pendulum has swung the other way.
Crazy weather we have here in South Carolina. Thanksgiving Day was mild, but I hope by Christmas we will have weather that feels more appropriate for the season.
The Christmas season is all about giving, and we are especially grateful for the support of the community at this time of year — support that will warm our seniors’ hearts both literally and figuratively.
A couple of years back we partnered with Palmetto Project’s Families Helping Families so that our seniors could be “adopted” by others who wanted to give back to someone in need.  This wonderful program provides assistance to families in need of food, clothing, and Christmas gifts.  Last year, Families Helping Families assisted more than 3,000 families in the Midlands.  And this year, more than 200 of those families will be our senior clients!  When we ask our seniors what they would like to receive as a gift, their lists are always modest…a pair of socks or a blanket. Maybe some gloves.
Most of our clients live alone, and are isolated and lonely in their own homes. To have them know that they are not forgotten, and that someone is thinking of them is in itself a gift. I wish that I could personally deliver all 200 packages to our seniors, because I can just imagine the joy of each one when they are given their gifts.
To each of you who adopted a senior through Families Helping Families, THANK YOU for brightening the holidays for a needy senior!  Your kindness and generosity are appreciated!
