967-2017: Celebrating 50 years of serving seniors

Blog

January 11, 2017

2017 will be special for Senior Resources.  The Richland-Lexington Council on Aging was chartered in 1967 to serve older adults in Richland and Lexington Counties.  So 2017 marks our 50th year in service to seniors!

We began by operating a senior center that served both Richland and Lexington counties, but in 1979, Lexington County formed its own council on aging, leaving us dedicated to Richland County. Over the years, we received funding to provide other types of services to seniors in the Midlands area, so in 1983 we became the Council on Aging of the Midlands.  As we grew, we became known as more than just a provider of services, and in 1998 changed our name to Senior Resources, to reflect a new mission and values.

In 2017, we will have several events to celebrate our anniversary and to continue bringing awareness to senior issues. We kick off the year with a Summit on Aging, an educational conference bringing together experts in gerontology, long-term care, caregiver support, and financial planning.  The Summit promises to be a day filled with education and lively discussions, bringing information and resources to seniors, caregivers, health care professionals and students.  Space is limited, so register todayif you haven’t done so!

We will also have other events next year that will be fun and educational, including a Senior Hunger Lunch & Learn, our annual March for Meals, and a night at the ballpark.  The highlight of our year of celebration will be a gala in November that will be a “must attend” event.  You will hear more about these events as the year goes on, but you can always visit our website to get a sneak peek at them.

We hope you will celebrate with us this year by attending some of these events, and helping us to bring awareness to senior issues.
