Over the summer, I had the privilege of catching up with Betty and Keller, two incredible women who were instrumental in launching what we now know as Senior Resources. Shortly after our founding in 1967, alongside a dedicated group of community advocates, local churches, and businesses, they saw a need to care for seniors in Richland County and took action to begin our Meals on Wheels program.
What began as a small team delivering homemade meals to 25 seniors from a church kitchen has steadily grown—just like the need in our community. Today, we’re proud to share that we served 1,158 homebound clients through Meals on Wheels this year, with nearly 300 additional seniors participating in our congregate meal sites, 121 supported through AmeriCorps Seniors, and 444 members at the Lourie Center staying active and engaged.
This weekend, we were saddened to learn of Betty’s passing. Her dedication, along with Keller’s and so many others, laid the foundation for the vital work we do today. Thousands of lives have been touched because of their vision and the collective efforts of our community.
As we reflect on our beginnings, we are grateful for how far we’ve come. We recently released our Annual Report, which highlights the many ways your support has allowed us to grow and meet the needs of seniors in our community.
But the work is far from over. Each day, more seniors face the challenges of aging, food insecurity, and isolation. Your year-end donation ensures that we can continue to expand and adapt to meet the ever-growing needs of our neighbors.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are continuing a decades-long commitment to create a stronger, more compassionate community for all seniors.
Sincerely,
Andrew Boozer
Executive Director
